A reliable and durable vehicle is one of the most important keys to the success of an automaker like Isuzu.
Long-lasting vehicles are a hallmark of this Japanese car manufacturer.
MU-X is their flagship midsize SUV, so I’m having difficulty finding any faults with it. It is important to keep in mind, however, that despite this reputation, this vehicle does have some common concerns. Isuzu MUX problems include:
Common problems with the Isuzu MUX
1. Poorly painted surfaces:
It is common for these vehicles, especially the 2014-2018 models, to have thin, soft paintwork, which I have personal experience with and what other owners have reported.
Its thin paintwork makes it easy to scratch, so the Isuzu MUX isn’t suitable for kids.
Taking care of your vehicle and washing it regularly are the best ways to prevent this from happening (and using a wax to prevent UV rays).
Paint will become dull and chipped over time if you do not keep up with this maintenance.
2. Noisy seals on wheel hubs:
This can cause an unpleasant noise during driving, especially at speeds of 60 – 100 kph, as dirt accumulates on the hub seals and lubrication is lost.
Lubricating the seals at least once a year should fix this problem. As you can probably tell, it is only a minor issue.
3. Average Infotainment System:
It’s also a bit boring and looks outdated with the Isuzu MU-X infotainment system. In spite of the fact that it is a significantly better vehicle than some other brands, some areas for improvement remain to be addressed.
4. Cold engine turbo noise:
It is common for owners to complain about loud turbo noise at cold engine temperatures, during acceleration, or when driving uphill, despite the fact that the standard turbo is reliable and can last a long time.
ISUZU has made a few revisions to the standard turbo over time in order to make it more reliable. Some of the MUX cars have a standard turbo that goes out over time.
MUX and D-MAX turbochargers have been extended because of this known issue. As a result, they will replace the turbocharger for free if it fails under warranty.
5. Rattle on the loudspeaker:
In addition to the speaker rattling when you drive over bumpy roads or speed bumps, the MUX also has a problem with vibrations when you drive over rough surfaces. After a few years of driving the Isuzu MUX, the speakers are known to rattle a bit because they are not known to last very long.
6. Cracks in mountings:
The body mounts retain the vehicle frame and body together, and some owners reported that they cracked on their Isuzu Mux.
If you drive regularly over uneven roads, bad terrain, or offroad, the tires on the MUX may crack over time.
7. Malfunctions of head units:
In the early years of production, there has been a tendency for the head unit to malfunction. A result might be a blank display, a display that cuts out when driving, or a display that repeatedly restarts.
Are Isuzu MUXs reliable?
I evaluate vehicles’ reliability as a professional mechanic.
You can expect some minor problems here and there with the Isuzu Mux, but it can be a very reliable SUV. Before there is any issue with the engine, it lasts between 250 000 and 350 000 kilometers.
Maintaining an Isuzu Mux properly will ensure it runs for many years without experiencing any problems. Additionally, there are plenty of affordable Isuzu MUX parts available!

Frequently Asked Questions
How reliable is the Isuzu MU-X?
The Isuzu MU-X is generally considered reliable, with many owners reporting that regular servicing can help achieve high mileage (up to 500,000 km) without major issues. However, like any vehicle, it is not without its faults, and some users have expressed concerns over specific reliability aspects related to the engine and transmission systems.
What should potential buyers be aware of regarding recalls?
While there have been a few recalls associated with the Isuzu MU-X, they are not widespread concerns for most users. Prospective buyers should check if specific vehicles have been addressed under recall notices but can generally expect a reliable vehicle with proper maintenance history.
How does the Isuzu MU-X perform off-road?
The Isuzu MU-X is designed for off-road capabilities but may experience wear on components like CV joints due to heavy articulation. Owners should be mindful of this when using the vehicle in rugged conditions. Regular inspections of these parts can help prevent breakdowns during off-road adventures.
What are common user experiences regarding driving comfort?
Many drivers find that while the MU-X offers a spacious interior suitable for families, it can feel cumbersome in tight spaces due to its size. Additionally, some users have noted that advanced driver assistance systems can be overly sensitive, which may detract from the driving experience.
Are there any known long-term issues with older models?
Older models of the Isuzu MU-X may exhibit some of the same problems as newer versions, particularly regarding engine performance and electrical systems. However, many long-term owners report satisfaction with their vehicles when properly maintained.
